Fundación Arte del Mundo, based in the town of Baños, Tungurahua, Ecuador is a non-profit arts and literacy organization recognized by the Ecuadorian Ministry of Culture.
It was founded with the intention of providing and supporting cultural and educational activities and resources for the approximately 20,000 residents in an area.
Our goal is to offer ongoing classes, workshops and events in all aspects of the arts that will serve toward building self-confidence and vision within the cultural context of the region.
With the help of the public, local businesses, international supporters and volunteers we develop cultural projects throughout the community in collaboration with other foundations and schools in the area
Two very optimistic people, Alegria Mejia Roman and Ray Hood, from the city of Baños formed a small cultural center they called Arte del Mundo, which was inaugurated September 2, 2006. In spite of a volcanic eruption which had recently occurred, they decided to open a space dedicated to the arts, where they developed classes in art and cultural workshops of interest for the residents of the area.
In 2008, others in the community took note of Ray and Alegria's efforts and encouraged them to expand the program they were offering and to include a children's library. Some of the group were interested in including a theater in the future.
The group went looking for a space to become the home of Arte del Mundo and found our current home at the corner of Calle Julio Cañar and Avenida Oriente. At first the location seemed too large but it has proven to be the opposite - the location has actually allowed us to support the program by providing adequate space for volunteers to live on site.
We have also been able to renovate a garage space into the only "black box" theater in the province of Tungurahua.
